ELGA Handicap Trophy

Our team to play in the ELGA Handicap Trophy at Darwen Golf Club on 10th May is The Captain (Jim Eke), Alex Bell, John Kershaw and Tony Walsh. Players should liaise with the professional at Darwen to arrange a practice round.

Club Cup Knockout

Club Cup fixtures are displayed in the locker room. First round singles matches must be completed by 8th May and doubles by 5th June.

International Matchplay

A full list of ‘International Matchplay’ fixtures is posted in the locker room. The first match is Wednesday 30th April.

Socials

St George’s Night with BMP Europe Brass Band was a great success. The raffle and stand up bingo were well received. Good old English bitter at £1.30 a pint went down quite well too!  Thanks to Janet Whittaker for organising the excellent raffle prizes.

On Saturday 24th May we have the popular Rovers v Burnley barbecue and karaoke. It has been decided that a hog roast would be far too costly as the idea is to raise money for charity so we are keeping to the very successful and popular format.

We have managed to negotiate a reduction in the cost of installing satellite TV but it is still far more than we are prepared to pay so further enquiries are ongoing to find appropriate and economical viable equipment.

Alan Whittaker will be circulating fund raising football cards on Friday nights.

Quiz Night

The next Quiz Night is on Thursday 15th May. (8 for 8.30pm) with quizmaster Dave Bottomley. Free supper is provided, kindly sponsored by Dave Kirkham. The bonus question has still not been won so next time it will be a massive £230 plus, so miss it at your peril.

Quizzes will be held every month during the golfing season.

House

The carpets have been cleaned and the curtains removed for their annual dry clean.

Work is ongoing with the gents’ locker room entrance, which will be completed very soon.

The area behind the bar is next on the list for decorating.

Brewery Supplies

We have negotiated a deal with Carlsberg Tetley which means that our relationship with Thwaites is coming to an end. Whilst we look forward to a long and happy time with our new supplier we must thank Thwaites for the excellent service and products they have supplied over the last few years. New pumps and logos will be appearing behind the bar soon along with exciting new products.

Carlsberg Tetley are keen to promote their wares and will be holding a launch night on a Friday in the near future with subsidies and other member benefits including a draw for a gallon of beer for a few weeks following the launch.

Greens

All greens have been verticut, top-dressed and fertilised and weed killer has been applied to greens and tees so please be aware that dangerous substances are on the course so don’t lick your balls.

The greens are now being cut to regular playing height for competitions.

A leak in the pond has been repaired so it is now back to full capacity.

All bunkers are in play and areas of GUR are clearly marked.

The general lift clean and place rule will end on 30th April but please read starting sheets for individual competitions to confirm rules of the day.

Car Parking

Members are politely requested not to park in spaces specifically reserved for club officials. Such spaces are clearly marked. Council may invoke disciplinary proceedings against persistent offenders.

Access Road

The Captain and Treasurer have met with Mr & Mrs Cornthwaite of Whooley Lane Farm. Following their discussions Marshall has agreed to improve the surface of the road near to the entrance to his farm. For our part we are to supply large signs with poles to warn road users of the prevalent dangers such as children and animals. We are also to carry out work on the road in our area of responsibility.

Having established a good working relationship, which should see improvements in the road surface, we would not like the hard work spoiled by the adverse actions of any of our members. Please do not drive at a speed and in a manner that could be considered excessive for the conditions. Always be aware that children, horse riders and others also use the lane. Please drive sensibly.

Action will be taken against drivers of vehicles using the lane in an inconsiderate and inappropriate manner.

PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY

AND SENSIBLY

AND GIVE DUE REGARD

TO ALL ROAD USERS
